My Vipassana experience

A month after Vipassana:

A month has now passed away since I returned from the Vipassana Meditation Centre at Amersfoort, in the Netherlands. Since lot of my friends were asking me where I was during the Christmas and new year and the one who knew that I was gone to find myself were asking how the meditation went, I thought write it so that you have an idea what it was all about.

Since I was called at the last moment to join the course, I myself had very little idea about Vipassana. What I knew for sure was that I would be gone for 10 days. I packed my clothes for 10 days and got my train to Amersfoort. After a ride for about 3 hours, I arrived at the meditation centre at De Glind.

The registration, the evening meal and the orientation about the courses kept me excited and the 8 pm on that very day, the course and the noble silence was started.

With a short meditation, we went to sleep at 9 pm and there I was with mere curiosity of 10 more days which were due to come.

You are awaken with a trilling sound of a gong every morning at 4 am and you try to start your day half asleep. I was there at the meditation hall by 4.30 every morning which I was proud of. We followed the instructions and kept on meditating from 4am till 9 pm except during the breakfast and lunch time. There wasn’t any dinner!

First 3 days were mostly the concentration of your respiration and then from 4 till 10th day, it was all about the sensation and equanimity.  What I felt during those 10 days where the biggest learning of my life. I believe that I had never maintained such a strong discipline in my whole life and the willingness to achieve something had never been so sharp.

Even though being born in a Hindu/ Buddhist community, I realised that I know so less about my own beliefs.  It was an eye opener on so many aspects of my own life for me. I regret now why I didn’t do this course earlier.

I had an ocean of time to think, Even though the whole meditation was about getting out of your thoughts.  But I thought, thought and kept on thinking even though i didnt want those thoughts….there were this immensity of thoughts which would sometimes keep me awake at night.  A regret of the past or a fear of the future; the journeys and the difficulties of life I have been through and also the merriest events, the wonderful people I met in last years…..  the thoughts came and passed away.

Coming back home, I feel like I have regained a new life.  I’m trying to practicing it in day to day life where I cope my stress with my meditative thoughts. Nothing is permanent. Whatever happens, it all has the same characteristics of coming and passing away.  I do try to meditate even though the evening hours are very difficult coz of the tiredness. I’m holding to my morning sessions even though I'm mostly half asleep.

I learned to forgive. I think, I now can distance myself when an event occurs so that I wouldn’t let come upto my heart try to maintain my equanimity.   I believe that I would now react differently than I used to do it before. Separating me from day to happiness or miseries is not always evident but I do try to apply it! I think it helps you to concentrate in several aspects of life and try to teach you a meaning of life. I feel more relaxed and I understand why I'm meditating; not for the sake of someone's wishes but my own choice.

I’m glad that I’ve already registered for one day courses for coming months and I’m dedicated to do the 10 days course in dec 2014.

I am joining the one day courses too. The last one was at 26 of January in Brussels.

The practical arrangement and more info about Vipassana can be found here.

Peace,
Raj

Nepal Festival 2012: Weaknesses and Opportunities

The Nepali version of the news was online through different Nepali website based in Belgium. I'm posting the English version here!

Writing commentary or news has not been my speciality in recent years. Not due to the busy schedule but just giving comment does not always effectively lead to a solution.
Last Sunday I was in Nepal festival in Antwerp.  Like everyone else, I had heard and read about it in different online platforms and quite curious to attend. Even though it had already been organized so many times; it was the first time I was going to attend the first time remains quite memorable.

After visiting the event, the whole thing was going in my head and thought to pin it down to share what they feel; I believe that there are so many other people who feel the same!

Let me tell first what I saw there. I arrived there around 15u. Raining and cold Belgian summer weather seemed quite hardly affecting the organizing committee. As the main stage didn’t have a covered roof, the performances had to be halted in every 10 min. The enthusiasm of the announcer wasn’t really helping to unite the folks around the stage. There were few stalls selling Nepali handicrafts and food. I also noticed a stall giving info about organized travel journeys to Nepal and there was a stall where you could get Posters printed by Nepal Tourism Board.

I had some snacks, wandered around, and greeted the people I know. Giving a percent wouldn’t be accurate, but I could clearly tell that almost everyone who were present there were Nepali leaving few “Belgian” apart.  I saw 3 cultural shows given by different ethnic group representing Nepali dance, music and dresses.

I heard afterwards that the programme was inaugurated by Nahima Lanjri a federal parliament member of CD&V. She is a heavyweight within the party but I really have a feeling that we missed the charm and opportunity. This program could have helped to enlighten many people who were unknown about Nepal and our rich cultural and natural heritage.

Here I have come up with comment which could be taken into consideration for upcoming events.

The biggest weakness was the advertisement of the programme. The programme was supposed to introduce Nepal to the Belgian people but almost nobody knew about it. I did an online search where I found no information about the event. There were almost only Nepalis present coz no Belgian people were aware of it. The few who were there were actually invited by us so they knew already someone from Nepal. The organizer published it in Nepali online sites but didn’t think about publishing it in Belgian/Dutch website. Gazet Van Antwerpen could have been a perfect example. De Antwerpnaar; which is delivered for free to every family living in Antwerp. They publish every two weeks every event of the city. Our event could have easily got into their paper but the organizer didn’t think about it. City of Antwerp organizes lot of event during the summer with the name of “Zomer van Antwerpen”. No, we didn’t think to get our event there. The publicity was the biggest reason why we had such a little attendance of Belgians in the programme.

The announcer was speaking in English and Nepali. Wouldn’t it have been ideal to do the announcements also in Dutch? I don’t think we lacked enough Dutch speaking lads and ladies here though. That would also give us the opportunity to show that we respect the local language and people and are even integrated into the society here. It would have also attracted other people who couldn’t speak English. Whether we like it or not, Dutch is the language of this place and it should have got priority in the announcement.

The location itself was a minor too. I wonder why we didn’t choose the “Groenplaats”, “Grote Markt or the front of the Central Station. You could have easily attracted 1000s of people if those locations could have been chosen. You should have just contacted the city council for the permission. Het Steenplein itself is very outlying place and very unlikely that people would show up there unless they knew about it. You could have put some marking or arrows from the Groenplaats, may be with Nepali flag or an attracting picture to attract the curious people. I searched that and sadly found none.

The preparation lacked visibility. I had read few times in the Nepali online news sites where they had been meetings and people holding positions for different responsibilities but the outcome was far worse than it sounded like it would be. A Program organized by the embassy of our proud country was so minimized. It lacked the charm, the festivality and entertainment. You could have easily put some child animation activity, Dress up like Nepali act, or proper welcome gate where you feel like you are now entering in Nepal.

The main stage didn’t have roof. Every other stall did have a roof!!! I don’t know why they decided to build up a stage without room even though the weather forecast wasn’t really so good. Even though the forecast had been good, you can’t really trust Belgian weather. It was raining and the stage programs were broken every 10 min. That just shows the scarcity of preparedness and professionalism.

At the end, if it had been called a day for Nepali in Antwerp I would say it was good enough according to Nepali standard. But if you organize a programme saying we want to attract tourists and introduce our rich culture and heritage then it didn’t work out. With all the respect to the organizer who worked hard to make it possible, you didn’t represent Nepal as it should have been. Neither do I think that the programme made anyone interested to come to Nepal. Our friends go to Nepal because we tell them personally how helpful, friendly and generous we are.

I hope this news reaches as a positive feedback to the organizer so that the future events could do better!

Raj

A nice quote...

It is so important to let certain things go. To release them. To cut loose. People need to understand that no one is playing with marked cards; sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. Don’t expect to get anything back, don’t expect recognition for your efforts, and don’t expect your genius to be discovered or your love to be understood. Complete the circle. Not out of pride, inability or arrogance, but simply because whatever it is no longer fits in your life. Close the door, change the record, clean the house, get rid of the dust, stop being who you were and become who you are.

Yes, We can!

Yes, We can! – Democrat President-Elect Barack Obama

How can I not write anything for this historical moment? Barack Obama has won the American election. The win may mean many things to many people. For me, It’s a win for a hard-working Afro-American who struggled for his life and proved that there is nothing impossible. I was following every moment of the election result in TV and internet, staying awake late at night and when the final victory was announced, I was immensely glad. I knew there were millions of people who were out there in the world to share that happiest moment. …….The First Black President of United States of America.
Obama, a sign of change. Here is a video of his victory speech. I completely understand why people have tears in their eyes with happiness. This is surely a moment to be glad about!
Obama, We all love you!

The Football Match I missed!

As a true supported of Club Brugge, I was supposed to go to watch the First Round of UEFA Cup game in Bern. It was against BSC Young Boys, a team from Bern. I had to cancel the plan at the last minute but the sensation of the match lasted quite last as it ended 2-2 at the last minutes. Glad that we won the home match against them and proceed to the Group phase.

Here is a short video of the game. I don’t know who took this video but we just discovered that my two best friends with whom I was supposed to go are there in the video if you look carefully at 25th second.

Reality Shows!

Watching TV sometimes can get on your nerves! I still remember when I used to watch a Nepali program just to criticize how ugly it was. I don’t know they still show that program “Hijo aajaka kuraa” literally “the talks of yesterday and today”. I hated that program but did watch it sometimes coz the next day I had to tell my friends how bad it was!

Here, the Belgian TVs are just crazy about the reality shows! Every channels has reality shows running! The Big brothers or Toast Kannibaal, Lost in Tokyo, Peking express or Temptation Island or Boer zoekt vrouw! (Farmer searches woman)

Ok, back to the point, I wanna talk about the “Celebrity Shock”. It’s a reality show at a Belgian TV (VTM) where popular Flemish celebrities go to different destinations to feel the different aspects of live. Well, they are supposed to feel the shocks. There are 4 duos who depart to 4 different destinations of the world.

Interestingly, a duo is actually now in Nepal. 48 years old Flemish actress and authoress Pascale Platel and 29 years old Flemish actor, also very popular as Simon van Wyck from TV series “Sara” are facing Shocks everyday in a sort of Buddhist monastery institution.

Well, Pascale and Gert are now in Nepal for Celebrety Shock. They are placed in a Buddhist monastery somewhere nearby Bouddhanath ( I reckon), in north east of KTM. They will be there separated from the outer world and will live like a monk and nun.

This is now the second episode on air and actually I’m watching it now and writing this.

I’m not against the reality shows. That’s something I’m very sure of. But the overload of commerciality’s in the program makes it so ugly that I just can’t stand it. Its not that I’m inspired to write about it coz they are now showing Nepal but the whole idea they create about the third world is so ridiculous.
And it doesn’t only go about the problems of a selected location. Its about the way how they show it at TV.

Like the reality show, “The Temptation Island” where 8 young couples were severely tested for their faith to each other. Of course, even though they knew there was always a camera watching them, they ended of being messy with each other’s partners and so! These sort of reality shows just make fun of the whole human life aspects...Love, sentiment and relationship. Moreover, people seem to like it. They think that it should be like this in reality and I guess some people do even try to live through the reality show!

Is it impact of materialism? The developed mentality? The independency? An answer seems to be deeper than we think!

Back to “Celebrity Shock” again! Ok, so there is a duo (Pascale and Gert) living in a Buddhist Monastery. They have to adopt the life of a Nun and Monk there, learn to meditate, eat in a mess, and sleep with 100s other people in the same small hall… of course, the shocks!

Ok, here are now my concerns; I don’t think it actually shows the real picture of Nepal. Im not saying that they should show the “real Nepal” but the nature of the program seems more suitable for a country where Buddhism has so many influences in life. How many Nepali do live like a monk where 88% of the people actually are Hindu and where Buddhism and Hinduism live together in a perfect harmony. A separation between these two religions in Nepal is very hard coz they are so much mixed up with each other. It pictures Nepal as a real Buddhist country but in fact it’s not fully true.

Our duo (Pascale and Gert) is having lot of of shocks there! The duos who signed up for a program chose to go to receive the shocks themselves. I thought that they would somehow be prepared to discover a new world, cultures, location and circumstances. But our duo isn't seem to be prepared. They miss their Belgium so much. I, obviously, understand that they miss home, (who doesn’t…) but the way they express it is so ridiculous. They say whatever they like just coz those monks don't understand Dutch. Why is it so difficult for you to take it as the way it is when you chose to go there yourself? You could have always lived in your “luxurious clean apartment” and wouldn’t have had a single word to complain about but now you have chosen to discover something new but not to impose your lifestyles there or not to make any stupid comment about it. It’s the way people live there, and they like it and they appreciate it regardless you like it or not. They didn’t ask you to come there so you can’t play the boss! Why don’t you care that there is camera filming you and whatever you say for anything will be shown to millions of people later.

You are not at your home, you at least have to realise that. Our Simon (Gert) desperately misses his cigarettes. I don’t smoke so I don’t know how bad it is to be away from cigarettes but our Simon’s comments were just too funny! He has to sleep with other children at same hall and what he says when he wakes up the next morning is something to smile but not to appreciate!!!

Other duos are in Mumbai India, Greenland, Guyana and their stories aren’t less interesting too.

I’m personally not against the reality shows filmed in third world. They can be interesting as it gives you a chance to discover and see a different world. Adventurous shows let you test your horizons and talents too. “Expeditie Robinson” can be a good example of that where people are tested with nature.

To be precise, I’m against the makers of those reality shows which laughs at and contempt the culture, human who live there in particular way and their traditions. Dear western program makers, it’s not bad what they do there, it just different than the way you are used to. Just because you learnt to eat with fork and knife doesn’t mean that eating with hands is bad. People who eat with hand aren’t doing anything wrong but they are just doing it differently than you are used to. I know it’s a very simple example to prove a big theory but sometimes things can be so simple as long as you can have a look it from their eyes. If you can laugh about their styles they can laugh about yours too. It’s not about civilization. You can’t just pop up into a culture and say “they are not civilized”. And I don’t think Civilization has anything to do with Modernism or Scientification.

Well, this is the world we live in these days where the night life of Paris Hilton or Britney Spears is more important than the dying people in Iraq. It doesn’t become a news when people have nothing to eat in Africa but we spend hours watching how to be slim.

I know complaining isn't a solution...

Peace,
Raj

Back to Busy Belgium!

I'm now back to Belgium after a wonderful trip to Slovenia and Italy. It was a long journey from Venice to Gent. I had to use all the modes of transportation to travel today... Boat, Bus, Plane, Train and Tram!!! It was really nice to meet some great couch surfers and travellers in Slovenia. Climbing the holist and the highest mountain in Slovenia, Triglav, was also another interesting part of the journey.
I will surely upload photos soon.

I can’t wait to start another journey again. Who knows... Prague, Copenhagen, Valencia, Vetlanda or even USA! There are obviously options enough!
See ya all!

Following Slovenian Trail

Next week Monday starts my Slovenian journey. Its gonna be a long 10 hrs drive to Ljubljana from Gent and most likely I’ll be deadly tired. The last weekend job before the holiday finally begins doesn’t seem less challenging either.
Anyway, Slovenia……..here I come!!!

Here is the basic plan of the journey from 18th August till 3rd September:

18th.......... Drive to Ljubljana
19th- 21st.... Ljubljana
22nd-23rd..... Novo-Mesto and river Kolpa area
24th-26th..... The eastern areas (Maribor, Putj)
27th-29th..... Triglav National park
30th-31st..... Ljubljana
1st -2nd...... Venice (Italy)
3rd........... Fly back to Belgium from Venice Treviso

The first part of the journey would be wandering around Ljubljana. I’m still searching a couch in Ljubljana but I haven’t been so lucky enough yet to find a host for me. Its coz I have been really busy lately and don’t have time enough to write CS requests. But I do have a host in Novo Mesto. During the Park visit, I will be staying at the park’s little huts!
Rest of the accommodation plan is still needed to be updated.

Hehe, if you have a couch free in Slovenia, Plssssssssssss do let me know! I Promise im gonna be a good guest!

There is a reason why I chose Slovenia for my east European trip. Well, Paulo Coelho, obviously! His book “Veronica decides to die” tells about a Slovenian girl. I, as an amateur translator of his books, thought it very necessary to visit Ljubljana before even I think to translate that book. His books have impressed my life in a deep way and I really hope to translate few other books after Alchemist.

Except this, rest is all back to normal! Summer is absolutely at its full speed and I’m doing my best to cope with it. I had a very busy and Gentse Feesten and had few days spent in Paris too. I guess I needed that peace from Paris to clam myself after those wild festival nights!

The blog was supposed to be updated frequently but it hasn’t been so. It has rarely become a blog to post my poems every now and then.

Anyway, life has its own turns and I just had to accept it. There were days when I would have liked to share many things about me but lately it has become more personal things and the blog hasn’t been as it was supposed to be. I hope my readers (if there are any ;-) ) weren’t disappointed for that.
To mention, Archana Khadka, a special friend of mine is flying to US on the same day I’m beginning my journey. She will be studying micro-biology for few years. I’ve been telling her the stories of studying abroad and hope she will have a fantastic time over there. I will keep my finger crossed!

Well, for my journey, I will try to keep myself closer to nature and avoid being a typical tourist. I’m very much open to my trip. I don’t like to travel in planned schedule anyway. Once I arrive in Slovenia, all I would be keeping in mind is my flight back to Belgium from Venice Treviso on 3rd of Sep. So, if you know any interesting place that this "Nepali-Belgian" guy should see, then your advices are highly appreciated. One thing for sure, I wanna see real Slovenian people, eat Slovenian food drink Slovenian beers and visit rural part of the country so that I can proudly say I HAVE BEEN to Slovenia.

Inspiration

Sometimes, we all have to feel
alone and frightened before
we can appreciate the life
that surrounds us.

Life changes as we grow,
and we must learn to accept this.
The more we learn, the more we grow.
Hurting, being scared,
feeling alone, and crying
are part of the learning process;
understanding our feelings
makes life challenging
and rewarding.
Going through difficult times
makes you who you are.

You have taken one of
the most significant steps
you will ever have to.
Enter each new day
telling yourself that
you deserve to smile.
Enter each new day believing
that you can make someone else smile inside,
because you are a beautiful person.
Your kind of beauty is inside you,
and it fills the world
with your presence.
People can feel that.
Be happy; your whole life
is ahead of you.
It is your life, your chance
to be who and what you want to be.

Turn back

When time comes you find yourself in deep trouble
like a ship lost in the mid-sea during a storm
You want to cry and need a shoulder to lean on
Seem hopeless and could not move on...
Got no one around whom to count on.

Maybe you have totally forgotten me
Have given up on me for somebody
Think I am useless and nothing but a strange man
So you shun and make a mock on me.

You might be surprised when you turn your back
See me smile with open arms and extended hands
For unlike them whom you prefer to be with than me
I'll never give up...
Turn my back on you.

I'll be your candle
Offer you light so you may not stumble

Years have passed

Years have Passed since leaving home
journeying, a traveller alone
I am walking, my friend! Walking
away from the beginning, toward an end unknown.
Years have passed.....

Every morning I set out to walk
and every evening I light the stars
when every day ends the same way
Why does it make me so afraid?
Years have passed.....

When, as I go, wherever I stay
feels like my house to me
if I were to retrace to my steps tomorrow
how would I know my home?
Years have passed.....

28 December 2007

Happy New Year 2008!!!

All those promises we made
All those oaths we took together
Beautiful days we spent
Those lovely nights we passed
You are the one who brought dawn into my life
Do you recollect? Do you remember?

We stayed awake all nights
We were lost in each other
We spoke about our love
Out of loneliness
We met each other everyday
Do you recollect? Do you remember?

In your arms, I found solace and spent precious moments of my life
Your beautiful moon-like face that I etched on my heart
We were so close
And I happened to be your destiny
On my lips was your name all the time
Do you recollect? Do you remember?

In daylight, in my dreams
You are the one always in my sight
You are my life; you are what my story is all about
You are my destiny
I loved you and took you for my own
Do you recollect? Do you remember?

You gave me a place in your heart
With love, you lent colours to my dreams
Your lips I kissed,
In your arms I swayed,
In your eyes I dwelt,
Do you recollect? Do you remember?

WISHING YOU A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR 2008!!!

birthday celebrations

Dearest friends,
Even I didn’t notice how soon it came back again…. Yeah, I’m talking about my birthday. One more year of experiences, ups and downs and stories has been added on my age last Friday (12 October). Since I was busy during the weekend, I decided to postpone the celebration a little forward and the celebration is absolutely incomplete without your presence.

So, I would like to invite you all for an aperitif drink on Wednesday (17 October) in Café AFSNIS at Sint-Jacob from 9 pm onwards.

I’m really looking forward to see you all there!

Look at me!

One more poem again!

When you find yourself feeling down.
When the past comes back to haunt your dreams.
If you find yourself thinking it was all your fault.
Turn around and look at me.
See the love for you in my eyes.
See the friendship that will hold you as you cry.
Feel the beating of my heart and all of the special things you brought into my life and heart.
Just look at me.
When you shed tears of past hurts and pains.
You think it was your fault it came to an end.
When you think you are alone.
Turn around and look at me.
You will find a love so true and love that believes in you.
You will know from the look in my eyes that you are someone special.
You have nothing to feel bad about you were not the one who was bad.
Look at me feel my touch
Look at me and feel my love
Look at me and see yourself in my eyes
I think you find you are more than you ever knew.
I know you will see yourself through different eyes.
Your heart will be touched and your life and thoughts will change.
Look at me let me change your world.
Let me show you how love should be.
Let me show you a world of love you never knew.
Just turn around and see me with you.
Look at me I will always see the real you and I will always love you.
If you look at me you will know each word I write is true.
Look at me.

Empty!

What is this empty feeling? A blank so empty so heavy?
Will it ever go away, or worse will I let it? Forget it?
Don't know that I'll ever be ready.

A burden on my heart, clogs my mind, drowns my eyes, tears my faith apart.
Why did you do this? Is this really you?
How and when did you go?
That I'll ever accept this, I don't know.

Is time flying by or standing still? A ticking clock running in circles trying to fill
This empty feeling.
Will it ever go away, or worse will I let it? Forget it?
Don't know that I'll ever be ready.

I take a deep breath again, try to shake it off as if it were attached and not within.
This is for the better I sometimes hear my head screaming while in fear.
Am I trying to find what I've lost? Or trying to gain something new here?

That I'll ever find it or who? I can't see today for tomorrow as I didn't see yesterday that this sorrow
Would bring this empty feeling.
Will it ever go away, or worse will I let it? Forget it.
Don't know that I'll ever be ready.

A burden on my heart, clogs my mind, drowns my eyes, tears my faith apart.
Why did you do this? Is this really you?
How and when did you go?
That I'll ever accept this, I don't know
This empty feeling.

One of those poems of my literary age!

Maybe on your way

There won’t be my steps

Maybe in your eyes

There won’t be my dreams

But you will always be there

Knocking at my heart.....

Many days were past

Ample excuses were made

Meeting turned into tragedy

Like the songs without melody

Maybe in your darkness

There won’t be my enlightenment

Maybe in your songs

There won’t be my words

But you will always be there

Knocking at my heart.....

When I remembered you,

Tears rolled down and I asked them

Why they were out,

They replied that there is someone beautiful in eyes

And they had no place there anymore.

Maybe in your fantasy

There won’t be my portraits

Maybe in your deserted winter

There won’t be my spring

But you will always be there

Knocking at my heart.....

Time is restless

Like all the feelings

Heart is sensitive

With no endings

Maybe in your dreams

There won’t be my visions

Maybe in your reality

There won’t be my practicality

But you will always be there

Knocking at my heart.....

.....forever!

Don't let anyone steal your Dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.
